Texas High School Rodeo Association Region 8 at home in the Uvalde County Fairplex

Rodeo Culture Thrives in Uvalde as Region 8 Athletes Shine

On a chilly January morning, the Uvalde Fairplex comes alive as young rodeo athletes prepare for the Texas High School Rodeo Association Region 8 event. The grounds are filled with families, competitors, and horses ready for the challenges ahead. Wendy Speer, Uvalde County Fairplex manager, celebrates the arena's role as the official home for both THSRA and the Texas Junior High Rodeo Association (TJHRA) for Region 8.

Among the competitors, teens like Zane Guerra, Liza Elder, and Rylee Dodson exemplify the hard work and dedication it takes to succeed in rodeo. From overcoming medical challenges to balancing academics with hours of practice, these young athletes and their families form the backbone of the sport. Rodeo, for them, is more than just competition—it's about community, teamwork, and developing lifelong skills.

Region 8 has produced numerous champions, including the current world champion barrel racer, Hailey Kinsel. The region is known for its camaraderie, with parents and students alike working together to make each event a success. As the athletes face the pressures of competition, they also gain leadership, confidence, and resilience—qualities that will serve them throughout their lives.
