South Texas photographer captures ranchers’ legacy

From Oil Fields to Fine Art: The Story Behind Photographer Larry Trulove’s Inspiring Journey

For over 40 years, Larry Trulove balanced a demanding career in the Texas oil fields with a deep love for photography — a passion sparked as a student under his high school mentor, J.G. “Mickey” Horton, in Sabinal. Armed with a Pentax K1000 and a sharp artistic eye, Trulove began capturing life’s quiet beauty long before the digital age.

His devotion to the craft never faded. Even while welding pipelines, his camera was never far from reach. When the digital revolution forced him to adapt in 2005, a new chapter began — guided by renowned nature photographer Al Perry, whom Trulove met during a South Texas photo competition. Their partnership led to unforgettable adventures, including an 11-day pilgrimage to Alaska’s Denali National Park, where Trulove had a life-changing flight over Mount McKinley.

Mentors like Perry and the late Tom Ulrich helped refine Trulove’s perspective, teaching him the value of "one good image" and the importance of following your passion. Today, his work is featured in A Rancher’s Legacy and admired by thousands. His family and peers agree: Trulove doesn’t just take pictures — he tells stories through light and lens.

“Larry takes the gift of seeing things in a better light, and shares that gift with the world.” — Dan Eason, co-founder of A Rancher’s Legacy
