Reviving San Antonio’s Cowboy Spirit: A Dream to Restore the Stockyards
For Bobby Acosta, childhood memories of the Union Stockyards sparked a lifelong dream — to preserve the cowboy culture and revive San Antonio’s rich ranching history. Today, he leads the San Antonio Stockyards Historical Society (SASHS), a nonprofit aiming to restore that legacy and bring a new kind of rodeo back to town.
Inspired by cities like Fort Worth, Acosta and his team envision a vibrant mixed-use venue with cattle drives, trail rides, chuckwagon dinners, cowboy storytelling, and more — all rooted in the traditions that shaped Texas. With support from local leaders and organizations, SASHS is already restoring a historic ranch house for a museum and building partnerships to ensure that future generations understand the value of agriculture, history, and hard work.
