A Towering Tribute: L.L. “Dave” Davis’ Cross and the Legacy of Double D Ranch
If you’ve ever driven Highway 16 from Pipe Creek or Highway 46 toward Boerne, chances are you’ve seen the striking 101-foot-tall steel cross rising from a mountaintop — a feat of engineering, faith, and vision crafted by L.L. “Dave” Davis.
At 90 years old, Davis is a Marine Corps veteran, innovator with 71 patents, and founder of DAVCO Technology. But it’s his passion project — Double D Ranch, a pristine 740-acre wildlife sanctuary near San Antonio — that may be his most heartfelt creation. From designing the rust-proof cross out of Corten steel to nurturing herds of elk, turkeys, and even a pair of rescued donkeys named Bonnie and Clyde, Davis has turned the ranch into a living testament to faith, family, and stewardship.
Originally envisioned as a public venue, Davis eventually chose to protect the peace of his wildlife rather than commercialize the property. “I’ve just grown to love and value the animals so much that I don’t want anything to disturb their habitat,” he says.
🔩 His story spans world-changing innovations, a lifelong love of the land, and a deep devotion to God — all seen through the lens of an engineer who “figures out a new way to do a thing and gets a patent for it.”
