Just 50 miles outside of San Antonio, Big Springs Ranch for Children in Leakey, Texas, is more than a scenic retreat—it’s a safe haven for abused and orphaned youth, where nature, care, and community come together to transform lives. The peaceful 7,000-acre ranch, donated by rancher Oma Bell Perry in 1996, is now a thriving campus run by Hill Country Youth Ranch (HCYR), providing therapeutic care, education, and life skills to children ages 6–18.
What began with one man’s vision in Ingram, Texas, in 1976 has grown into a network of three campuses dedicated to healing through hands-on experience, personal growth, and love. From horseback therapy to summer work crews, and even a rugged trail marathon that helps fund the mission, this story is one of legacy, heart, and hope.
