John Sewell, Manager for the Harris Ranch, feeds cotton seed to the deer herd to help cultivate better looking antlers and improve the protein intake of the population. Sewell believes feeding cotton seed on a hunting ranch is good for the following reasons:

 

1.       Rain doesn’t hurt it

2.       Provides 90% total digestible nutrition, TDN

3.        Improves doe’s lactation

4.       Provides 20% fat

5.       Provides 20% more protein

6.       Provides a perfect source of fiber

7.       Average consumption rate per animal is 1.5 lbs. per day

8.       Pigs, coon, and turkey don’t typically eat it

9.       Feeders are cheap and easy to make and use

10.    Very little waste
